Calliope 7 - Chapter 4Chapter 4
Since Nanami had been staring at her for the entire time, Anne approached her first and bowed. "Hello, my name is Anne. Pleased to meet you." Whoa, this is so formal, Nanami thought, bowing too. "Um...uh, my name is Nanami and I am pleased to meet you too, Anna." "It's Anne," she replied. "Oh, sorry, An-- An-- Ani," Nanami looked a little disappointed at her inability to pronounce the western name. Right behind her, Satomi's heart raced. Nanami was having a casual conversation with a killing machine. The older girl tried without success to gently steer Nanami away from Anne towards the stairs. "I'm seven Ani, how old are you? I hope we can be friends." "I'm nine years old. And yes, being friends is good. Oh, and it's okay if you call me Ani." This pleasantry seemed a little forced for Anne, but it was useful for mission acco
Calliope 7 - Chapter 3Chapter 3
Riku, the youngest boy, pointed his finger at the orb and spoke first. "It's broken." He was right. A crack had formed in the orb. And at the sound of his voice a second crack formed.
"How are you holding that? Isn't it hot?" said Hiroaki. He pointed at what seemed like steam rising from the orb, which now had further cracked. The Man said nothing and continued to look at the children.
"It's not going to explode is it?" said Haruka. Crack.
Nanami looked close and then around the yard. "There's some water over there, we can dip it in there and cool it off, okay?" Crack. Oops. At least she wasn't the first one to break it.
"What a waste of time. What is this, some kind of mind game? It's not like you're gonna adopt me anyway." Raiden rolled his eyes in disgust as yet another crack formed.
"Don't say that, Raiden." said Atsuko.
Calliope 7 - Chapter 2Chapter 2
A little girl ran into the office, red-faced and breathing hard. "Miss Motoko, can we please go outside? It's really nice out."
Miss Motoko, a thin woman aged beyond her 30 years, gazed at the child through the veil of cigarette smoke. "Sure, as long at the main room has been cleaned up. It has, hasn't it?"
"Yes Miss Motoko!" The little girl spun out of the room just as fast as she had come in. Her cries of "We can go!" were shortly followed by the thunder of many feet, then the slam of the back door.
At least she couldn't see or hear them now. Thank goodness. Screw that this was a violation of the rules, not watching them. I'm so sick of this job...and my life, she thought. The only reason I'm stuck here is because I'm an orphan and I couldn't do anything else. No money, nobody important I know. And these kids! What a bunch

It's probably just as well they woke me up, Calliope thought. I need to relax and see about solving this problem, but sleep is not what I intended. He relaxed back into the chair again. Time to clear the mind. He started with prayer, since what he was about to do seemed rather daunting. Divine assistance would be a good thing. He asked for inspiration on how to better handle the mess ahead. He waited for an answer...and waited...but it appeared that heaven was being quiet today, and eventually he lost concentration and the mists of Morpheus enveloped him and he dreamed.
"What's that?" the girl said, peering down at something in his lap. He didn't know either, so he looked too. Oh, it's a book, an old one with ancient writing on it, he thought. It looked important. However, although he could almost make it out, t
Calliope 7: Chapter 1"Run scenario 237A again, this time with increased emphasis on restocking elements." The man stared down at the display console, the maps and graphs etching lines onto his face in the dim light.
That's not going to work. We've been down this road already. The voice of the ship, usually smooth and feminine, was sounding a bit annoyed right now.
"We are still too short, it all falls apart before we can get help mobilized."
Who are you talking to, yourself?
I am the one running these scenarios, after all, so it's not like I don't know the outcome.
Calliope stepped away from the display table, wrapped his cloak around himself and dropped into the pilot chair. His back hurt. He was over 40 years of age, and bending over the screen for hours was not on the list of good posture practices. There had to be a way to make this work, he thought, there always is. It simply eludes me.&
